Choirboy at St. Peter's, Leeds, under Dr. Creser. Organist at St. Chad's, Leeds at age 17, and deputy organist at St. Peter's. Private organist to the Hon. Mrs Meynell Ingram. Had written a string quartet and trio before 21st birthday

Emigrated 1891 to Australia and, a year or so later, met and married Madame Annie Steinhauer, the Danish soprano. The couple returned to England and went on a continental concert tour. In 1904 the couple performed for Queen Alexandra at Buckingham Palace.

Besides some four hundred songs, he composed chamber and orchestral works and some church music.
