Census Dates  

The return for 1911 is now available, TWO years EARLY.

The 1921 and 1931 returns should be available in 2022, and 2032 respectively.

Census Dates

There are two links provided for each Census Return:-

1:- A Standard web page version.

2:- A ZIP compressed version of the standard web page. This will give a much shorter download time.

Although the Census Returns are listed by County, the Primary listing is by Piece and Folio.

Notes:- Census Registration Districts do not coincide exactly with county boundaries.

Registration Districts may contain places in other counties, and may omit border places in the county.

Registration Districts are a PRO classification that applies to Census records and Birth, Marriage and Death registrations.

Census are referenced not by book and page number but by Piece and Folio, i.e 2422/25, or more accurately, RG9 2422/25. The RG9 identifying it is as the 1861 census.

A Census Piece is a collection of many individual enumerators' books for a district. A Census Folio is a sheet within one of those books. A folio is the front and back of a sheet i.e. two pages.

To find the Piece Number that covers a specific location, the PRO online catalogue (Links) can be used.
